Langkawi Getaway 2006
    - Sunday, May 14, 2006

To sum it up, it was a long and tedious journey to our destination Langkawi. It really felt as though we were in the Amazing Race so it was a pretty good experience. We started off the journey by meeting at 6.30pm at Woodlands MRT last Tuesday. Then we took a bus to the check point, then taxi from JB to Larkin bus terminal, then 10 hr bus ride from Larkin to Alor Star, then bus from there to Kedah Ferry Terminal, and then 1 and a half hour of ferry ride from kedah to langkawi. If that's not enough,we had to rent three cars for the 12 of us to travel to the resort we were staying at.

Yanxiang had everything planned out for us la so we merely just followed him which was really convenient for all of us. Even when we were in our rented cars, the two cars just had to follow Yanxiang's car to get to where we wanted to head to. From the time we met at 6.30pm, we eventually reached our resort at 2.30pm!!!So the total amount of time spent on travelling+waiting time+meal times+toilet breaks=approximately 20hours!Ridiculous man..but as the photos show, it sure was worth it...

We kept stopping along the way during the bus rides for toilet breaks and meals, and now I really do appreciate toilets in Singapore man..Toilets in Malaysia, probably cos those parts are more rural, are all the squatting kind which I absolutely hate,no toilet paper, have to pay 30cents and worse of all may sometimes have to pour water to flush it down yourself!

I also came to realize that Malaysian drivers are damn skillful la..every taxi ride was a roller coaster ride man..which was pretty exciting..and driving a manual car in Malaysia is super cool since there are fewer cars on the road and you can speed if you want to. Kudos to our four fantastic drivers:Yanxiang, Zixian, Jonathan and Daniel! We managed to get to every destination safe and sound..=)

Food was really cheap too...However, the weird thing was we had three meals of fast food(Macs, KFC and Marry Brown)..haha..kinda a bad idea since we have fast food in Singapore..but we really could not find anything else to eat. Of course, we had our fair share of Malaysian food too la such as Nasi Goreng, nasi padang, kway teow goreng etc and not forgetting seafood! Pretty cheap by our standards, crabs, prawns and other zi cha dishes for about 10 sing per person.

But we later found out from Sel's sis that we kena cheated cos we could get better and cheaper dishes elsewhere. Oh well, now we know so next time won't get cheated already la.At least we had a decent meal with rice and delicious food so I'm not complaining. That was for lunch and dinner. the best part was breakfast...cheap and good!Yanxiang brought a toaster, the kind u can toast together with whatever filling you wanted. So first day, we had toast with tuna, second day was toast with either kaya or cheese. Superb!!He really deserves our commendation for being the best tour guide of the year!

Great job also to Chris for her fluent Bahasa Indonesia language which came in useful when trying to bargain with the cab drivers for a lower fare or asking of directions.

Alor Star Bus Terminal

While waiting for Yanxiang's aunt to teach us how to get to the Ferry Terminal...

In the lao pok non-aircon bus to the Ferry terminal...

Christine asleep in the ferry..another unglam shot of her..haha..but we still love you Chris!

That's our tour guide Yanxiang...with the rest of us waiting for instructions...

We finally reached Langkawi!

Some pretty sights of Langkawi..

Me and Hongkonger Joe!

The car in white was one of the lao pok manual cars that we rented...

Four of us in one car..with Jonathan our driver(the guy in black), together with Joe, me and Chee Kian..

First stop of the day was the Underwater World, not to see fishes but...

to buy alcohol! It was really cheap, the guys bought like two bottles of vodka and like maybe 12 cans of beers..Vodka was like about 18 Sing dollars..real steal man...

Sights along the car ride to our resort...

Our final destination: Berjaya Langkawi Beach and Spa Resort.

Pretty little rooms that we stayed in...each room was shared by two people,I shared with Mabel. We had 6 guys and 6 girls so it was easy to split the rooms. Thanks to Yanxiang's dad for helping us get free accommodation and at a five star resort somemore..it really helped us save alot of money..

A view of the exterior of the rooms, looks pretty much like kampongs..and it's surrounded by trees..

View of the beach from our rooms...

The vehicle that we took to get to our rooms..really another roller coaster ride man just that there was no safety protection or handle for us to hold on to..so basically we just held on to our seats and try not to get flung out of the vehicle..the drivers were all super skilful as they drove up steep slopes and narrow turns..

Me and Dan!

Group pics of the beach babes and hunks before heading down to none other than de BEACH!!We did not even bathe after the long and arduous journey and just changed, brush teeth and wash face and then zoomed off to the beach!Think we probably all stink like crazy in this photo...

Group pictures again after a good and long bath...

Drove down to a nearby restaurant called "Kittas" for dinner. We ordered typical zi cha dishes for example sambal kangkong and oatmeal prawns...pretty decent meal but we were practically feeding the mosquitos there la..and I am blood type A+ and I always seem to get the most bites..it was really funny cos some of us even had a few mosquitoes flying above our heads so then Dan started clapping above his head hoping to kill a few of them and everyone started following him too..haha..it seemed as though we were playing "who killed the most mosquitos" game..In the end, we had to ask the restaurant person to give us mosquito coils to drive the mosquitos away..

Photos in groups of fours at Kitta Resturant.

After dinner, we headed to CK and Dan's room for a game of CRANIUM but we only played one round then headed to our own rooms early to rest so that we will be all prepared for our the activities the next day. It was a good first day at Langkawi..
